Location: Luton Central Library (working across Active Luton sites and in the community)
About the role
As a Library Support Assistant & Driver, you’ll be at the heart of delivering our library and outreach services to the community. You’ll transport and deliver library stock and resources, engage with customers both in library buildings and at community locations, and play a key role in promoting the library and wider Active Luton offer. You’ll also support a wide range of activities and events for all ages, helping make the library an inclusive and welcoming place for everyone.
What you’ll be doing
• Delivering library stock and information to various locations, including customers’ homes, ensuring safety and excellent customer care.
• Engaging with customers in a friendly and proactive manner, assisting with tasks such as joining the library, answering queries, and using digital services.
• Supporting and delivering activities and events for children and adults in both library and outreach settings.
• Carrying out administrative and stock-related tasks, including data input, stock auditing, and maintaining tidy, organised spaces.
• Driving library vehicles safely, completing basic maintenance checks, and ensuring they are clean and ready for use.
• Assisting with cash handling, operating registers, and maintaining accurate transaction records.
• Promoting library services and wider Active Luton activities, mentoring volunteers, and signposting to other local services.
• Ensuring all operations comply with health and safety standards, policies, and procedures.
What we’re looking for
We’re looking for someone who:
• Has experience in a customer-focused role.
• Can engage confidently with people of all ages and backgrounds.
• Is self-motivated, organised, and able to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Can adapt to a busy and varied working environment.
• Is willing to work flexibly, including some outreach and occasional cover in other library sites.
Skills
Essential:
• Able to deal politely and tactfully with a wide range of people, face to face, over the telephone, and via written communication.
• Able to use basic word processing, email, and other computer applications.
• Able to converse fluently and accurately in English with members of the public, providing effective help and advice.
• Full and clean UK driving licence.
• Able to handle and move library stock daily with appropriate aids and stand for long periods.
• Able to work across Active Luton sites when needed to support other teams.
• Able to lone work for lengthy periods and has a willingness to work flexibly to meet the needs of the service.
Desirable:
• Experience working in a library environment.
• Experience delivering or supporting activities for adults and children.
• Knowledge of health and safety, including safeguarding.
• First Aid qualification (or willingness to gain one).
